What You Learn About People After They Leave…

When I worked for someone else, I didn’t talk on the phone to friends. I didn’t email my boyfriend or my parents. I didn’t check my voice mail or text messages. And I certainly didn’t check my social networking sites!

When I went to work, I went to work. That was that! I never felt that comfortable with a job that I could conduct my personal business at that job.

Since I opened up shop at HJMT COMMUNICATIONS, LLC, more than 17 years ago, I have seen staff come and go. Each time someone leaves, I find out more information about that person than when they were here during the 40 hour work week!

Where do I find things out? It’s not like I’m snooping. I need to find out where he/she was at with various projects. So, I check out his/her email. It’s typically the same thing each time. It’s emails back and forth to one’s boyfriend or girlfriend. Or, I see that emails to their home computer. I even see personal schedules logged into the work account. (I don’t care if you had lunch with Aunt Mary. Do I really need to know that you’re going to that funky club in NYC on Saturday night?)

They say that you should be careful what you put on your social networking page. And that’s true, you should. But, when you get a job, try not to keep personal stuff on the company computer. (Some things are better off not being known!)
