Now that we are on lockdown or what some Governors are calling a “Pause,” you are with your significant other for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s been nearly two months for many of us living in New York. So, what do you do to keep yourself from staying sane?

Here are some tips on living in lockdown with your significant other:

For You:

  • Create your own space – Make sure that you have your own space apart from your significant other. If you live in a one-bedroom apartment, rotate who gets the bedroom and who gets the living room, especially if you are both working.
  • Take time for yourself – Take a bath or give yourself a facial. If you can, take a walk alone. Get some air and make sure to take care of yourself.
  • Exercise – If you like to walk, run, or cycle, go out and do it. You need alone time and by exercising alone you can clear your head.

Together:

  • Prepare meals together – Now that you are home, you can make various meals daily. Look online for recipe suggestions. Cut up veggies and prepare your dinners together.
  • Play a game – if you don’t have a traditional board game, find a game online that you can do together.
  • Have a Zoom Cocktail Party – invite friends to join you on Zoom and celebrate your friendship by having a Zoom Cocktail Party.
  • Watch TV – Enjoy your favorite shows together and just enjoy each other’s company.
  • Read poetry together – Remember when you first met? Remember that feeling that you got? Try to get those feelings back during these times of COVID-19 by reading a poetry book or any other book together.

What to do if you fight?

I’m not a psychologist but here are some suggestions.

  • Don’t Blow Up – These are stressful times. Try to control yourself and if you feel yourself getting angry, go into another room. Meditate and try to remember that your partner is just as stressed out as you so give each other some slack right now.
  • If you feel like saying something that you know will cause an argument – count to five before saying it. If after five seconds you feel it is appropriate to say, say it.
  • Smile at each other – Smiling helps. Try to laugh too. They are definitely stress relievers.
