I’ve been doing a book tour for From Couch Potato to Endurance Athlete for nearly six months now and have learned a few things along the way. Recently, some people have asked me what it takes to have a successful book tour. So here are some tips:
Plan your tour route
Determine the cities and venues where you want to promote your book and schedule events accordingly.
Connect with local media
Reach out to local newspapers, radio stations, and TV shows. They may want to feature you during your visit.
Partner with local bookstores
Bookstores are often a natural stop for authors on a book tour, and they can help you reach a wider audience. I have found that the smaller, independent bookstores promote the talk more than the big box stores, so think about that when you arrange for book signings.
Utilize social media
Promote your book tour on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and even TikTok to build excitement and reach a larger audience.
Engage with your audience
During events, give a reading, answer questions, and sign copies of your book. Interact with your audience and make a lasting impression.
Follow up with attendees
Sometimes it’s not possible to follow up but if it is, after each event, send a thank you note or email to those who attended. This can help build relationships and foster word-of-mouth marketing.
Be flexible
The book tour is a marathon, not a sprint. Adjust your schedule and plans as needed to make the most of your time on the road.
