Did you see the Sing Off this season? I watched the entire series until the last A cappella group was standing.
I never realized how much I enjoy A cappella I remember hearing barber shop quartets many years back and just recently when I was touring college campuses with my daughter, we saw a few of the students practicing. The harmonies were amazing.
This past television season, my son turned me on to The Sing-Off. So every Monday night, well whenever we had the chance because we DVR’d it, we would watch, as one of sixteen groups would go home and sing a “swan” song.
I wasn’t that impressed with the three judges – Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles and Shawn Stockman. Although they are all great musicians, I found their comments to be lame and meaningless. So, when we watched, we would fast forward through their comments.
From the beginning, my two favorite groups were Pentatonix (a five member group from Arlington, Texas) and Urban Method (an eight group band that focused on urbanizing songs).
I loved Urban Method because they were so different than the other groups. Every song they sung, they added rap to it. They really did a great job. I was actually surprised that they didn’t come in second place.
But I really enjoyed Pentatonix. They were young, cute, and had a lot of personality in their performances. They also had dazzeling harmonies and strong bass background. The female vocalist, Kirstin Maldonado had a striking voice. For only being 19, when she performed, she had the whole audience engaged. Other group members included: Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola.
Pentatonix won the Sing-Off and with that, they won $200,000 plus a contract with a recording studio.
All the groups were outstanding but from the beginning I thought that Pentatonix stood out. And sometimes, that’s all you need to win.
