After running seven miles this morning, I came home and my family told me that they wanted to go walk through the corn maze at the Queens County Farm Museum, New York City’s only working farm.
How bad could that be? I thought. We’ll be in and out of there in a 1/2 hour and I’ll get a manicure/pedicure.
We traveled to Queens with Lisa Gordon, HJMT‘s VP who was staying with me for the week, and easily found the farm. We waited on a long line to get into the maze.
“This family was out in 30 minutes,” the announcer said. “This family took 3 hours to complete the maze…”
I looked inquisitively at my family. Could it possibly take that long to get out? I knew they were good with clues so I really thought this little excursion would be a quick one.
When we got to the front of the line, we were given a map and a flag and we entered the maze.
At first, we were having a great time. It was so cool the way the maze was cut out from the corn fields. Then the bickering started. “I think we should go this way.” “No, I think we should go that way…”
We walked and walked and walked. We seemed to be going nowhere. I kept seeing the same landmarks several times. I was sure we were truly lost. After 45 minutes we found ourselves back at the entrance instead of the exit! We went in a complete circle. Finally, we found a turn we hadn’t taken and quickly found the exit. It only took us an hour and 14 minutes to get out of the maze. (We estimated that we covered about four miles.)
And now, I’m wondering why my back hurts after doing a 1/2 marathon today!
