Talking with Adelphi College Students…

One of my Facebook friends, Sharyn O’Mara asked if I would be the guest lecturer in her public relations 101 class at Adelphi. I was excited for the opportunity. I love talking with students, especially those who want to listen to some guidance.

When I got there, Sharyn was so cute. She was so excited that I was there and she made me feel so welcomed. The students were quiet but they had thought of questions prior to me coming.

So after I talked about my background in public relations and how and why I started my own business, Sharyn came up to the front of the class and handed me a stack of index cards.

I started to go through them, one by one.

“What is your favorite aspect of PR?” one student wrote.

I told the class that I loved being able to help companies get the most exposure as possible.

“Why did you open your own firm?” another wrote.

I always wanted to own my own business. Ever since I got my first job at Public I Publicity, a music publicity firm, I wanted to be an entrepreneur.

“How long are your days?” a student wrote.

My days and nights are all about work and looking for opportunities to grow my business. But since I love it and I’m passionate about it, it doesn’t feel like work. It’s my life.

“What are some of the regrets you have?” a student wrote.

Regrets, I said. I really don’t have any. I’m happy that I went into the public relations business and I’m glad I made the decision to go in that direction.

After getting drilled some more, Sharyn presented me with a fun scarecrow for the fall season. It was so nice to get acknowledgement from her and I really enjoyed talking with the students.

Students have far too little exposure to the spectrum of career options before them. All they know are “subjects” as structured by the college curriculum. You may have sparked an interest in one or more students to travel a road they never thought was available to them. Visits from entrepreneurs and professionals of all types should be a weekly practice on every campus regardless of students’ majors.
