I’m not opposed to retailers like CVS Pharmacy selling religious books if they sell books for all religions. Everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe. However, it bothers me when there is only one kind of religious book in a store and it’s prominently displayed.
At the CVS at Merrick Mall on Johnson Place in Merrick, there is a rack filled with Christian books. You can’t help but notice them when you stand on line trying to pick up your prescription. Books range from The Bible to Prayers for Women.
Everyone has the right to practice whatever they want, but to me, I feel that a nonsectarian bookcase with trashy novels would be more appropriate. These books belong somewhere else.
Whenever I’m standing on line, I find myself compelled to pick up a book and see what’s inside. The other day, I found a young child reading, “How to Make Your Husband Happy.” That upset me.
How does CVS have the right to push religious books? Move the bookcase. Put it somewhere else — somewhere more suitable but don’t put it next to the long line by the prescription area.
What if someone isn’t Christian? What if someone is Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu? Why aren’t there all different types of religious books on the kiosk?
I don’t know, maybe I’m nuts. I just feel like it’s not right. Leave religion out of prescription drugs and let people choose their own books.
