I just came back from a weekend at Golf school at the Original Golf School at Mt. Snow. I had been there a few years back when I started the game. At that point, I didn’t know anything about the game. I didn’t know which clubs to use at which shot or the difference between a pitch and a chip. Years later, obviously I know that stuff but the reason why I went to golf school was to improve my game.
I went with my husband, Brian, and a friend, Steve. Our instructor’s name was Ken. He was an older guy, much older guy and said some very funny things like:
- You can’t hit the little ball until you hit the big ball;
- You need to slice the cheese when you swing the club;
- Always cross over and brush grass…
- Maintain your “Pendulum”
When we went out on the course, we were at the green just about to putt. Ken said, “one of the five of us will get it in the hole.”
I looked at Steve with a puzzled look. Steve looked behind him to see if there was anyone else there besides the three of us and Ken. And Brian said, “I guess that means I can putt twice!”
A lot of the time, he would forget what he was saying. Like one time, we were in the classroom reviewing tapes of ourselves making swings. He started with Steve and talked about his swing for a while. He talked about mine for a few minutes and then went to Brian.
“Brian, I know exactly what your problem is and I know once it’s fixed you will be an amazing player,” he said.
Then nothing. He stopped talking. The three of us sat there in silence for a moment. Then Steve said, “What does Brian need to do?”
Ken ignored him and went on to say that it was time for lunch.
Although Ken was forgetful, he really was an amazing teacher. I felt I got a lot out of the two day intense course and look forward to getting out there and practicing!
