September 11th was the scariest day of our lives. Do you remember where you were?
I do. I was in my house frantically getting dressed to go to a meeting at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.
My husband said, “look at that, a plane went into the twin towers.”
It didn’t register. I just shook my head and scurried out the door. I didn’t want to be late.
As I was in the car, I turned on the radio and listened. I was in shock. How could this happen? I started to cry.
When I got to the Girl Scouts office in Garden City, the entire staff was glued to the television. They saw the second plane hit the towers. I was in panic mode. “Oh my God, where are my children?”
Cell phones didn’t work and classes were in session. My daughter, who was in fifth grade at the time, watched the entire event out her classroom window. It was such a clear day that the city was easily seen. I actually saw it too on my drive back from Garden City on the Meadowbrook Parkway.
When my kids eventually came home and I knew they were safe, I just couldn’t believe what happened. I felt like the entire world stopped.
It did.
All we saw were pictures of people jumping out of buildings or people covered in white soot. And, we all knew at least one person who was killed. It was a horrible, scary and very sad day for all of us.
On this day of remembrance, please share your stories.
