Isn’t it enough that small businesses get slammed with massive taxes? I mean come on. We pay for payroll taxes on the taxes that our staff already pays. We pay self-employment tax on the tax that already comes out of our paychecks. We pay tax for our rental property and the list goes on!
And now there’s a new tax — The MTA tax — and it doesn’t really seem fair to me. We pay a percentage of our employees pay and that goes toward a “commuter tax.”
The only one on staff who really commutes, is me. And I have to pay that too! Does that seem right to you?
But the clincher was the other day. I was in New York City on several appointments. I usually take the subway but I was running late and just hopped into a cab.
“Take me to the corner of 33 and 8th Avenue,” I told the driver.
When we got there, I noticed that there was an additional charge of $.50 cents.
“Why are you charging me an additional 50 cents?” I asked the driver.
“Oh, that’s the new MTA tax,” he said.
“Wait a second,” I said. “I don’t understand. I’m paying this tax every month and now I’m getting hit sitting in a cab? Isn’t that double dipping?”
He laughed, gave me my change and I was out the door. Maybe we should just hand over all of our money to the government?
