In the Friday, May 22nd edition of the Wall Street Journal, an article on “Changing the Art on the White House Walls” was the cover story of the Weekend Edition. Apparently, some of the more classic paintings are being traded in for more modern art done by people of color. Many of the museums around the country have been offering their art collection as a loan.
According to the article, the Obama’s have been interested in modern art for a long time. Their Hyde Park home in Chicago featured many new modern artists along with black and white photographs. The article said that one of the first dates, the Obama’s went on was the Art Institute of Chicago.
The article put a smile on my face. It’s about time a President recognized the joy that art brings to the soul. I applaud President Obama and his wife for changing the art collection in the White House to incorporate today’s modern art with art painted in colonial times.
