Meet Guest Blogger, Lisa Gordon, HJMT’s Supervisor

photo_5.jpgI grew up in Rochester, NY. I was adopted at age 6 months from Seoul, Korea to my parents, Marilyn and Bruce Comstock. My father now lives in Victor, NY and my older sister is a Rochester City School District teacher living in Rochester, my mother is deceased.

I attended Fairport public schools (Dudley, Northside, Johanna Perrin, Minerva Deland, Fairport High School). After high school graduation, I was accepted into Syracuse University, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. I graduated with a BS in Magazine Journalism.

After graduation, I needed a change. I moved to Long Island with my then fiancé and started work at Nassau County Club. I had only ever been an hour and a half away from home, and I felt like I was missing out on something. I always had dreams to move to NYC and moving to Long Island seemed like the perfect stepping stone. My husband is also from Long Island, so we weren’t alone when moving there. But even so, it was a really hard transition for me. The first year was very difficult, and I was really homesick. I don’t think you truly appreciate Rochester and our tight-knit community until you have moved away and aren’t surrounded by it anymore.

About a year after I moved to Long Island, I was hired by HJMT COMMUNICATIONS, LLC, a full service public relations, social media, event planning and graphic design agency. As my career progressed, my husband and I also started thinking of raising a family and where we’d like to be when doing so. Also, where we’d like to permanently plant roots and buy our first home. I loved my job and my company, but I missed home. I missed my family, my friends, the lifestyle and the community that Rochester is so well known for.

So, in August of 2008, I moved back to my hometown, Fairport, NY. My husband now works for Bergmann Associates and I am still with HJMT spearheading our newest office location in Rochester. I’m lucky enough that my boss also thought Rochester was the perfect city to expand our small business.

I guess the main point is, I’m happy that I left Rochester to experience, Long Island and Manhattan (Because my firm has an office location on 57th and Madison in the City, I was able to experience NYC too!). But, even more so, I’m happy I came back. My community spirit is stronger than ever and I really do believe in our city. I think going away, made it all the more evident that it really doesn’t get much better than Rochester, NY. I look forward to building the newest HJMT office location, starting a family and planting roots in a city that supports its community and welcomes with open arms, people that have left and decided to move back!
