On a recent flight back from Milan to New York, I was a passenger on AlItalia. I had never been on this airline before. When I traveled from New York to Milan, I flew Delta. (Since I have a Delta American Express Card and accumulate mileage every time I charge, I tend to fly Delta.)
I was very impressed. The plane was new. Each seat was equipped with a remote control and touch screen panel where you can get a series of movies, entertainment, television, music, games and even stuff for teens and kids (which included games, movies and even television). In the game section, you could play by yourself or with other people on the plane.
The seats in first class reclined to beds. Business class had a recliner chair and I sat in economy class which just reclined slightly. All seats came with a cloth covering the pillow making each seat extremely sanitary for each customer. They also provided passengers with a green blanket and pillow (which most airlines do for an international flight.)
In addition to having our own televisions, at the front of each cabin had a viewer that showed exactly where we were and how much time was left to the flight. At the time of writing this blog, I had another six hours and twenty minutes left. (If you wanted to see a screen shot of what the pilot sees, you could click on “camera views.” At first, when I viewed the “camera views,” I saw buildings and shapes of towns. When we were flying over the Atlantic, I saw lots of clouds.)
The bathrooms were spacious. I was impressed because most bathrooms on a plane are very tiny – you could barely get in the door. I often feel bad for very overweight people because I don’t know how they get inside. But AlItalia wasn’t like that. It had plenty of room to move from the toilet to the sink with ample mirrors, which I found nice.
Actually, I was surprised but the food wasn’t bad either. I ate a vegetarian lasagna and had a glass of Tuscany wine. (I haven’t been able to get enough of that Tuscany vino!) In addition to my main course, I was also offered a cold vegetable salad which included a nice slice of nova. Bread, cheese, crackers and some fruit were also on the plate.
When I was finished, I had to go to the bathroom so I picked up my tray and walked to the back. I handed my tray to the flight attendant and said, “I hope this is okay that I’m bringing this to you but I had to go to the bathroom and didn’t want to spill.”
“It’s really not okay,” she said, “but I’ll take it anyway. Grazi.”
“Prego,” I replied and she directed me to the bathroom which was in the middle of the plane.
The only thing I didn’t like about the flight, besides it taking a really long time to get to NYC, was that at one point the plane got very bumpy and I had to get up to get a glass of water. I kept flying into people’s seats and was unable to keep my balance. As I was nearing toward the back of the plane, I noticed that there was a section that was divided off by full length curtains. That must be the staff taking a nap, I thought. Unfortunately at that moment, I fell into someone’s lap who was sitting or rather sleeping behind the curtain. A flight attendant pulled open the curtain and said, “watch where you are going! People are sleeping!”
“I’m so sorry,” I said and went back to my seat. But, was it really my fault that I fell?
All in all, I was impressed with AlItalia Airlines… I would definitely recommend it on your next trip to Italy…
