Stepping into the Paramount Theatre in Huntington for an 80’s 80-night concert was like slipping through a time warp back to the golden era of synth-pop and New Wave. I was in my late teens and early 20s in the 1980s, and the night brought me back to a special time when I lived in New York City.
The night was a nostalgic journey filled with electric performances from three iconic acts: Haircut 100, ABC, and Howard Jones.
The evening began with Haircut 100, who took the stage with an infectious energy. Nick Haywood was the lead singer. The band had yet to tour together in 45-plus years. They were fabulous, funky, and tight, showcasing their seamless chemistry and musical prowess. I loved hearing Fantastic Day, Boy Meets Girl, and Love Plus One.
Their set was a testament to their enduring appeal, effortlessly engaging the audience with catchy hooks and vibrant stage presence. It was clear that time had only enhanced their ability to deliver a memorable performance, much to the crowd’s delight.
ABC
Next up was ABC, with lead singer Martin Fry capturing attention in a dazzling Las Vegas-style outfit. The band delved into their classic hits with a sound that was as fresh and captivating as ever. “Poison Arrow” had the audience singing along with gusto, and they closed their set with the timeless “The Look of Love,” leaving an indelible mark on the evening. Fry’s charismatic performance and the band’s polished sound made for a standout segment of the concert.
Howard Jones
The night culminated with the arrival of Howard Jones, who added an element of surprise and theatricality to the show. Emerging in a pink robe, he quickly shed it to reveal a sparkly Vegas-style suit, paired with high shoes that matched his vibrant energy.
Jones’ performance was a visual and auditory delight, especially during “Pearl in the Shell,” which featured a captivating video of himself from over 40 years ago, singing alongside a man in chains. This juxtaposition of past and present was a clever nod to his long-standing career and artistic evolution.
Jones treated the audience to a medley of hits, with “Everlasting Love” resonating as a standout track, and closing with the anthemic “What is Love?” His set was a dynamic blend of nostalgia and innovation, perfectly capturing the spirit of the 80s while keeping the crowd thoroughly entertained. The audience was visibly thrilled, with the sold-out show prompting an additional night to be added due to overwhelming demand.
So, What Did I Think?
Overall, the 80’s night at the Paramount Theatre was a resounding success, offering a joyous celebration of a beloved musical era. Each band brought their unique flair to the stage, crafting an unforgettable experience that left concertgoers eagerly anticipating the next opportunity to revisit the magic of the 80s.
