What happens when you forget your wallet?
Ever leave your wallet at home? Once or twice, I’ve left my wallet at home, but I wasn’t too far from the house when I realized it was missing.
The other day, I went to the gym and left my wallet in my gym bag in the house. I went into the city. I didn’t even realize I didn’t have my wallet until I dropped off my car in a parking garage and went to the Coffee Bar on University and 12th Street.
At the Coffee Bar
The Coffee Bar is my go to place to have a good baked good and a cup of coffee or a nice sandwich on a baguette with coffee. I placed my order. I was starving and hadn’t eaten since earlier in the day.
“Can I have a turkey baguette, coffee and a water?” I asked.
“Shall I heat up the turkey?” the woman behind the counter asked me.
“Sure,” I said. It sounded delicious. My mouth was watering.
“That will be $14.95,” another woman behind the counter said.
I looked in my red Herschel backpack and couldn’t find my wallet. “OMG, I don’t have my wallet,” I announced.
“Keep looking maybe you will find it,” the woman said.
I looked. I couldn’t find it. I started to panic. “I’m sorry,” I said, “I can’t buy anything. I have no money.”
The woman gave me a nasty look. I left. I called my daughter. Thankfully, she was planning on meeting me for dinner and had a credit card to get my car out of the garage.
After finding $15 in my bag, I walked back in to the Coffee Bar and bought a cup of coffee. “You found your wallet?” the woman asked.
“No, but I had $15 on the bottom of my bag,” I said. She grinned.
At Nordstroms
After finishing my coffee, I walked toward Nordstroms. I had an hour to kill and I couldn’t stay at the Coffee Bar. (They give you internet access for 30 minutes then it cuts off.)
Of course, I found a ton of things I would try on and potentially buy, but I didn’t have my credit card. “You don’t see anything you like,” a sales woman said to me.
“No, the problem is, I see a lot I would like but I don’t have my credit card,” I told her. “I don’t have any cash or ID.”
“Well you know, you can go to the bank and tell them and they will provide you with cash,” she said.
Citibank to Save the Day
I went over to Citibank and they let me take out $200. I went back to Nordstrom’s. Maybe if Citibank will give me money from my account, they will also let me use my card. Although I’m a good customer there, the customer service person wouldn’t even try.
“You don’t have ID, then I can’t do anything for you,” he said. “But, if you want to open up an account, I can do that without ID.”
I found that very strange, but just shook my head and walked away.
This happens to me a lot actually! I’m thinking of buying one of those smart wallets, they are connected to your phone and alert you when you’re too far away.
Ha… I know! It’s hard when you end up transferring the wallet from one place to another. You always have to think about where it is…
This part has me shaking my head: I went over to Citibank and they let me take out $200. Do they have your photo on file? I can’t imagine anyone – even Chase, where I have been a customer forever – giving me evn $2 without ID.
I was actually very surprised that they just gave men $200 from my account without any form of ID. I’m glad they did because otherwise I would not have made it too far. They should have a photo ID on file somewhere, agree with you!
