Last Spring, Lisa Gordon, Supervisor of Publicity, and I ran a public relations interest badge class for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. The class went so well, that the Girl Scouts of Nassau County asked us to do the class again.
Since Lisa is up in Rochester spearheading the start of our third office, I did the class myself. This year, the class was held on Saturday, April 25th in the morning. There were 40 girls from middle school and high school ready and willing to learn all about public relations.
I started the morning teaching the girls everyday terms that pr professionals use. Some of the terms included press release, media list, blogs, microblogs, logistics and sponsorships.
After learning all of the terms, I broke the girls into their own “companies.” I had them create any kind of company that they wanted. We had a music store, a fashion store and even a pet store!
After they created their company, their first task was to create a logo and tagline. Then they wrote a press release about their company and what they do. They even created a tweet to post on Twitter about their company and the press release. Lastly, they planned a launch party.
Each of the companies presented in front of the room to all of the other girls. It was great to see what they created and how they really understood the importance of public relations. In the end, the girls all earned their public relations badge.
As a past Girl Scout, it was a great to give back and help the organization that I was a part of for 13 years. Girl Scouts helped me grow and become the public relations professional that I am today. I look forward to running the class again next year!
