I went to the Aquatic Center with my black Thierry Lasry glasses. After taking them off and putting them in my pocket, I went over to one of the lanes at the pool and started the swim. When I was finished, I grabbed my stuff and headed to the locker room.
After getting dressed, I realized that my glasses weren’t in my pocket. I looked all around. I went back to the pool area and got on the floor searching for my glasses. They were nowhere to be found. “Oh no, I love those glasses!” I was so upset.
I informed both the lifeguards and the front desk. No one turned them in. After a day or so, I went back and again asked everyone if anyone turned in glasses. They said, “nope.”
That afternoon, I headed over to Cohen’s Fashion Optical in Roosevelt Field.
But on my way and while I was there, I kept thinking “how am I going to decide which glasses work best for me? Will I trust the sales people or will I ask a consumer in the store?” That’s what led me to the following tips.
Seven Tips on Selecting New Glasses
1. Don’t be Brand Loyal – Open your mind to different brands. You don’t always need to get Gucci or Prada. There may be glasses that are exclusive to eyewear.
2. Look at Different Shapes – Make sure to try on shapes that you may not normally wear. I tried on round glasses, glasses with no color, and big square glasses.
3. Don’t Let the Service Folks Talk You Into a Pair – I find this very hard, especially when you are alone. Try to tune them out.
4. Listen to Other Customers — While I was at Cohen’s a man was buying Cartier glasses. They were so expensive and I was thinking since he was buying these expensive glasses, he may have good taste in glasses. I tried on a few for him and he told me which ones he thought looked best on me. One of the pairs that I was on the fence about, he loved. So, I bought them and I’m happy I did.
5. If You are Price Conscience – If you have a budget and need to stay within that budget, do yourself a favor and tell the customer service reps. They will bring out the glasses in your price range and believe me, there are great glasses in every range.
6. Consider your lifestyle – Think about the activities you’ll be doing while wearing your glasses and choose lenses and frames that fit your needs.
7. Look for the right fit — The glasses should fit comfortably on your nose and ears without slipping.
If you have any other tips, leave them in the comment section. I ended up buying two pairs of glasses – one gray and one clear. They were both from a brand I never heard of and I really like the way they look on me. So, although I lost one that I loved, I gained two.
