If you take the subway over to Union Square and get out of the station, you can’t help but notice the Farmer’s Market at Union Square Park. The market takes place every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday all year round from 9 am to 6 pm.
All of the vegetables and fruits are organically grown from farms around the city.
In addition to fruits and vegetables, you can also get fresh milk, yogurt, dried and fresh flowers, baked goods and more.
Every time I go to Union Square Park area, I notice the Farmer’s Market but quickly walk by, like a typical New Yorker in a hurry to get somewhere. However, on this day, I walked slowly through the market. The thing that struck me was the fresh produce. I was so impressed with how beautiful it all looked.
The Farmer’s Market is truly farmed to table fresh!
The most interesting vendor I saw, was one selling bones for dogs. There was every type of bone available. (I wanted to photograph it but felt like the guy was going to come after me with a bone, so I opted just to take note of it!)
In addition to the vendors, the Farmer’s Market hosts book signings, cooking demonstrations and other types of events to draw in the community.
The Farmer’s Market started in 1976. In the peak of the season, there are more than 140 regional farmers, fishermen, and bakers. The market is located in NYC’s public space on 14th Street in Union Square, and according to its website has more than 60,000 market shoppers.
