Falling in Mikonos

my hand

Our day in Mykonos began with excitement. As we disembarked from the Windstar ship, we decided to walk around town and head to one of its many beaches. However, the journey was with mishaps.

First, finding a taxi by the pier took a lot of work. We walked back and forth several times to find the cab, only to find ourselves back in the original location. It took us almost an hour before we found out where the taxi stand was located, and it took work to get there. At one point, we found ourselves walking on rocks so we didn’t get wet from the seawater.

The Journey Back

When we finally found a taxi, we were taken to a beach about 20 minutes from the pier. Thankfully, they had umbrellas and lounge chairs. We soaked up some sun and went in the water before returning home.

When we were ready, we asked the waiter to call a taxi.

Our taxi driver, exuding local charm, dropped us off farther from the pier than expected. This led to a friendly debate about whether to take a water taxi back to the ship. Little did we know, an unexpected twist would soon overshadow this decision point.

The Fall

In a moment that felt surreal, I took a step and suddenly twisted my ankle, finding myself on the ground. The fall was jarring; I landed hard on my hand and hip. Pain and swelling quickly followed, with my hand ballooning and my hip already bruising. Thankfully, my knee brace spared my knee from further injury.

Amidst the shock, the warmth of strangers enveloped me as they rushed to help. One particular woman, balancing her baby, handed me a bottle of water to soothe my swollen hand—a gesture of kindness that lightened the moment.

A Doctor’s Reassurance

Once upright and slightly steadier, we decided to take the water taxi back to the ship. Upon boarding the tender, serendipity struck again; a fellow passenger who happened to be a doctor offered his assistance. With a reassuring examination, he confirmed that my hand wasn’t broken, providing much-needed relief and comfort.

Gratitude Amidst Adventure

Looking back on the day, I can’t help but smile at the unexpected adventure it became. What began as a serene exploration in Mykonos turned into a tale of resilience and gratitude.

From the kindness of strangers to the camaraderie of fellow travelers and the gentle reassurance from a doctor, the experience highlighted the innate goodness in people.

While my hand and hip bore a colorful reminder of the day and my hand continued to swell, my spirit was lifted by the compassion I encountered. The ankle mishap served as a humorous reminder that sometimes, the most cherished stories stem from the most unforeseen tumbles.
