There’s something magical about autumn. The crisp air, the changing leaves, and the golden sunlight all come together to create a season that’s as fleeting as it is beautiful. A few weeks ago, I got to soak in the best of fall during a round of golf with two friends at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Long Island. One of those days felt almost cinematic, with nature putting on a stunning display of colors around us.
Whether you’re a golfer, a walker, or just someone who loves the outdoors, fall makes every activity feel more special.
Golfing Amid a Canvas of Color
Eisenhower Park is a classic golf spot in Long Island, and that day, the course felt like it was dressed up for the season. The leaves were transformed, with nearly every tree showcasing its autumn wardrobe of maroon, orange, yellow, and fiery red.
Every swing of the club sent the golf ball arcing through the air, seemingly cutting through the vibrant foliage. There’s something so satisfying about watching the ball fly against such a dazzling backdrop. But here’s the downside to fall golf—as beautiful as the leaves are, they make finding that little white ball challenging if it strays from the fairway!
Despite the occasional search mission through the vibrant carpet of fallen leaves, we appreciated every moment. Golf can sometimes be frustrating, but on this day, every missed shot and wayward ball offered an excuse to pause and admire the scenery around us.
Long Island’s Subtle Fall Charm
Living on Long Island, we don’t get the iconic early bursts of fall colors that places like New England or the Adirondacks are known for. Here, autumn takes its time. The real display often doesn’t begin until late October or early November, which makes days like this one feel even more special.
It’s easy to forget how beautiful this season can be when life gets busy. But strolling through Eisenhower Park, surrounded by those vibrant hues, reminded me to slow down and savor it.
Beyond Golf: Outdoor Activities to Enjoy Fall Foliage
Golfing was the perfect way to enjoy the autumn vibes that day, but it did get me thinking about other outdoor activities that allow you to experience the magic of fall foliage. After all, while running, walking, and golf are classic go-tos, other fun ways exist to immerse yourself in the season!
1. Hiking Through Scenic Trails
Long Island offers some incredible hiking trails that come alive in the fall. Spots like the Bethpage State Park trails or Caleb Smith State Park Preserve are perfect for leaf-peeping while stretching your legs. The crunch of leaves underfoot and the crisp air make hiking during fall an invigorating experience.
2. Biking Tours
Cycling through local parks or along Long Island’s many bike paths is a great way to enjoy the sights. Imagine coasting down tree-lined paths, surrounded by a sea of golds and reds. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just out for a leisurely ride, biking is a fantastic way to enjoy the season.
3. Kayaking or Canoeing
While fall might not be the first season you associate with water sports, kayaking or canoeing on calm waters is surprisingly serene during this time of year. Whether you paddle through the Peconic River or one of Long Island’s scenic lakes, the reflection of colorful leaves on the water is breathtaking.
4. Picnicking in the Park
Sometimes, the best way to enjoy fall is to sit back and take it all in. Pack a picnic and head to a nearby park with a view. Spread out a blanket, enjoy seasonal treats like apple cider and pumpkin muffins, and soak up the beauty around you.
5. Pumpkin Picking and Fall Festivals
Fall wouldn’t be complete without a trip to one of Long Island’s pumpkin patches or farms. Places like Harbes Family Farm or Hicks Nurseries combine the charm of autumn with fun activities like hayrides, corn mazes, and, of course, picking out the perfect pumpkin for your porch.
What Are Your Favorite Fall Activities?
Reflecting on that beautiful day of golf made me realize how many ways to enjoy the autumn season exist. Whether you’re chasing a golf ball through the leaves, hiking through a forest, or enjoying a quiet picnic, there’s something magical about being outdoors during fall. Don’t you think?
I, too, enjoyed some golf this Fall with the beautiful foliage as our backdrop. Not sure if the local area weather will support any more golf this year; Last year we were able to play Wild Turkey golf course on Black Friday. Who knows. May just have to stick with walking!
Thanks for your comments… It got cold way too fast this year!
