If you are an entrepreneur, you know that your day never turns off. Even if you work normal 50 or 60 hour work weeks, you are still on call no matter where you are or what you are doing.
Today is the fourth of July. My family and I were invited to Mattituck (which is on the north fork of Long Island) to visit my husband’s uncle. He just bought a beautiful vacation home on the open bay. The trip wasn’t as bad as I thought. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get there and there was very little traffic.
The house reminded me of the Grand Floridian in Disney World. White walls and floors, lots of fans going, picturesque windows all facing the private beach and soft comfortable lounge chairs laced the porch that overlooked the open water.
Our uncle’s girlfriend was a good host. She served us champagne upon our arrival and cooked up a storm of gourmet tasting foods for lunch.
As I was sitting on the porch, talking with my husband’s cousins, the cell phone rang.
“This is Andrew from News12 LI. I heard you have a press conference on Monday, can you tell me a little about it…”
I gave Andrew all the information and went back to my seat. Each time I got into another conversation with someone else, my mind wandered back to work. Numbers and figures entered my mind like a building blocks in a kids room. Do I have the right staffing? How can I expand in this economy? Should I scale back or move forward? Should I collaborate with more complementary services or competitors?
When I first started this business 16 years ago, I used to tell everyone to take the plunge and open their own shops. At that time, I was a one woman operation with some part timers and I worked out of my house with no overhead.
Today if you asked me the same question, I would say it takes a lot of guts and a hard stomach to be in business, especially a growing business with full time staff members and overhead. You also have to be working and on call 24/7.
Hello.
I would like to put a link to your site on my blog roll if you want to do the same for mine. It would be a good way to build up both of our readerships.
thank you.
