In London I met with a fellow EO’er (Entrepreneurs’ Organization) and talked with him for a bit about his business. At the end of the conversation, he handed me his business card. You could tell right away that he spent a small fortune on it because it was made of think non-bendable plastic and had a hollow number “1” etched in it.
“Wow, this is pretty cool,” I said as I examined the card.
“Yeah it took a lot of brainstorming and a lot of money to come up with the logo but I’m happy with it now….” he said.
Later that evening, I started to examine all the business cards I got from my trip to London. Some were oversized, others were odd-shaped and still others were simply plain, ordinary and didn’t stand out.
I went into my bag and took out a box of business cards that I brought along with me to London. The business cards didn’t promote my firm, HJMT COMMUNICATIONS, LLC, nor did it promote my blog, it promoted my book, “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Social Media but were afraid to ask….”
My staff and I decided to make up cards for London with our international phone number and places to order the book, including Borders UK and Amazon.com.
The cards were handsomely designed and I took several out of the box and was determined to scatter them throughout London. Everywhere I went, the business cards came along. I went to Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant at the Claridge Hotel, the business cards came along too and were strategically placed in the lobby and ladies’ room.
I went to Westminster Abby, the cards were there too. (I figured if they could charge admission to get in to look at this magnificent church, and they could have a snack bar and gift shop, then I could place the cards in the restroom and no one could get offended.)
I scattered about 250 cards throughout the town. Will they do anything for me? Will my book sales go up in Westminster, London, Mayfair and Cambridge? Only time will tell….
Does it matter what the cards look like? Maybe not, but what really matters most is what you do with them!
