Bumping Into People From the Past…

bumping into someone

The other day, I was coming out of my house when I heard someone calling my name — “Hilary, Hilary.”

I looked at a woman who was running towards me.  As she came closer, I realized it was Amy Fishman, a friend from elementary school through High School. We lost touch once we went to college.  But with the widespread use of Facebook, we reconnected almost a year ago.

She was in town to see her mother and was riding past my house when she saw me come out.  “I thought you lived on the Northshore,” she said.

I laughed. “No, I’m back where I started.”

I was so excited to see her.  She looked amazing and I felt as if time never stopped.

A few days later, I got an email from an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while.  We were friends when my daughter and her son were infants.  The kids were born a day apart and for the first few years, we used to walk the boardwalk together.

Hi Hilary.
Your name recently came across my desk…Do you remember when you first gave birth to your daughter and you used to walk on the boardwalk with me (Shari) and my son?  I was just in Long Beach and thought about you and your daughter and was wondering how you guys were.
Send an email if you remember us….
Shari

I immediately wrote her back. “Of course I remember you.  My daughter is now in college and my son is in High School.”

A few minutes later, the phone rang.  It was her.  “You are not going to believe this,” she said, “but my son and your daughter are going to the same college.  They are actually in the same school.”

We laughed and talked about making plans for the future.

There was once a time when people were in and out of your life, but with social networking, they are in your life forever.   Thanks Facebook!

That is the best thing about Facebook – reconnecting with old friends 🙂

How about this one: Like you, I reconnected with a friend (Ellen) from ElHi, who I hadn’t seen in about 20 years. She lives north of San Francisco. So I wrote that I was going out there on business, and she wrote back suggesting we get together. So we did. She brought her HS yearbook and was flipping through it telling me the people who moved to Cali and with whom she kept in touch. One couple (they both went to school with us) has a son, Brian, who is Ellen’s son’s best friend! As she described Brian, going on and on about his accomplishments, I realized that he married my best friend’s daughter! What a thunderbolt! My friend’s daughter’s in-laws, who live in California, went to school with me in Brooklyn. What are the chances of that?!

Hillary, I began writing a nostalgic, historical book about baby boomers’ influence by myself last year. Soon, I began a Facebook page for my East Meadow High School classmates (1965).  The 2nd response was from Cookie Horowitz, this adorable 16-year-old I knew slightly at EMHS.  She offered to help me any way she could.

Cookie and I are now co-authors of the upcoming Once Upon Our Times (Because Life Isn’t a Fairy Tale): 65 Years Growing up Baby Boomer.  I now realize what a major endeavor this is – and people from all across America are beginning to contribute their nostalgic memories of the 50s, 60s, etc. I hope your readers will visit our new FB page, click and like us to receive our daily updates and comments. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Once-Upon-Our-Times/259775887366062
