Over a year ago, my husband and I eagerly booked our latest Windstar Cruise—a decision inspired by our previous enchanting journeys through Italy and Japan with the same cruise line. Known for their intimate ships and personalized service, Windstar offers an experience that feels both luxurious and personal, and this trip through the Aegean was no exception.
Day 1: Athens, Greece
Our journey began in Athens, where we touched down in the early afternoon after a long flight from JFK. Despite the travel, we felt surprisingly refreshed and caught a taxi to the elegant King George Hotel. That first day was dedicated to exploring the city’s rich history, starting with a museum visit and culminating in a delightful dinner overlooking the iconic Parthenon. There’s nothing quite like dining with such a historic view to set the tone for an adventure.
Day 2: Athens and Boarding Windstar
Rising early, we ventured to the Parthenon itself. I was grateful for the handicapped elevator, which spared us the arduous climb due to my knee and my husband’s back issues. After a night at the King George, we headed to the port to board Windstar, our trusted vessel for this journey.
Day 3: Delphi Exploration
The next leg of our journey took us to Delphi. Sharing a cab with another couple, we explored the impressive museum and the ruins perched on the mountainside. Delphi’s ancient aura was captivating, though returning to the port proved a bit challenging until we secured a cab back.
Day 4: At Sea
The day at sea consisted of working out in the gym, followed by a massage. After that, we grabbed a nice spot and read our books while bathing in the sun.
Day 5: Santorini’s Allure
Arriving in Santorini, we planned a 6-mile hike. However, practicality won over ambition due to our physical concerns. Instead, we took a cab through the steep, stunning terrain. Shopping in Santorini was a highlight—upscale and intriguing, the boutiques offered unique finds.
Day 6: Bodrum, Turkey
Bodrum greeted us with its charming small town feel. A beachside coffee shop offered the perfect relaxation spot, and a swim in the inviting sea was rejuvenating. A minor hiccup occurred when I got lost among the similar-looking cafés, but eventually, I found my husband with a bit of luck and humor.
Day 7: Kusadasi and the Wonders of Ephesus
Kusadasi was a gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus. Wandering through the historic apartment buildings, some dating back to the 10th century BC, was fascinating. A private lunch in a nearby village with fellow passengers was a delightful interlude.
That evening, Windstar orchestrated a magical candlelight dinner at Ephesus with a string orchestra—a true highlight of the trip.
Day 8: Mykonos’ Beaches
In Mykonos, we faced the challenge of finding a cab, but once at the beach, the crystal-clear, 74-degree Fahrenheit water made the effort worthwhile. Renting a lounge chair and umbrella enhanced our beach day, and my shorty wetsuit was perfect for the swim.
Day 9: Lemnos’ Charm and Istanbul’s Grandeur
Our brief visit to Lemnos offered a delightful walk through non-touristy shops—a refreshing change. Afterward, we sailed to Istanbul, where we immersed ourselves in the city’s vibrant culture before concluding our adventure.
Windstar Cruises once again delivered an unparalleled experience, blending the serenity of the sea with the thrill of discovery. Each stop offered a unique tapestry of history, culture, and personal stories, leaving us enriched and eager for the next journey. As we flew from Istanbul to Amsterdam and then home, we carried with us memories of an unforgettable cruise through the enchanting Aegean.
