Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Florida was my mother’s favorite place to visit. She loved butterflies. She would buy me butterfly books, nick nacks, and clothing with butterflies. Every time we visited my parents from NY, she would suggest Butterfly World. Interestingly, my sister loved it there too.
I hadn’t been to Butterfly World in years. I remember it being nice but boring. How many butterflies could you sit and look at for hours on end?
But, I would go with them at least once a year for several years, never really appreciating the beauty of the place.
Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Florida
My running partner and friend, Didi, my father and I drove to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek from Lauderhill. It was about a 15-minute drive. We parked the car and walked up to the counter to pay for the tickets. There were $5 off coupons on the website. The fee was $29.95 with the discount. There were no senior discounts.
If you wanted more information about the butterflies, you could purchase a guide book for $1, which had the history of Butterfly World and all the names of the species. (Honestly, they should have given out the book to each family!)
My friend and I thought it was very expensive but wanted to check it out to see what it was. I hadn’t been there in years and to be honest, I didn’t remember it at all.
Several rooms
At Butterfly World, they had several rooms. The first two were butterflies only. There were thousands of them and about 150 different types. You enter the first two rooms and butterflies surround you.
There are some magnificent butterflies and in combination with meditative music, you feel very relaxed. People sat on benches and watched. Others stood in one spot to take photos. Children tried to catch the butterflies.
In addition to the two large rooms filled with butterflies, there was a bird sanctuary, a bug museum/zoo, and more. There were a nice little outdoor cafe and sitting area which served the typical park foods like hot dogs and hamburgers.
Butterfly World even had a place to purchase plants that attract butterflies.
My thoughts
It was a lovely place to visit for an hour or two but you can’t spend the whole day there. Well, you could, if you want to, but once you went through the various rooms there really was nothing to do. They did have a lovely gift shop but it was super expensive. So, we didn’t buy anything.
Would I recommend? Well, if you are in the area and you have an extra $30 to give away for the upkeep of this lovely place, then yes, I would recommend it. But don’t plan on going for the day. Plan something else to do to fill in for the time.
