Book Review: Cousins Maine Lobster – Hoe One Food Truck Became a Multimillion-Dollar Business
I love reading about success stories in business. I find these types of stories motivating and inspiring. The book, Cousins Maine Lobster – How One Food Truck Became a Multimillion-Dollar Business, is all that and more.
Jim Tselikis and Sabin Lomac are cousins from Maine. Although they grew up in different households and had different experiences including one moving 3000 miles away, they came together and developed a concept that took this country by a storm. The concept – selling maine lobster via a food truck in California.
Within a couple of years and with the help of Shark Tank Celebrity, Barbara Corcoran, their truck became a nationally-recognized brand and expanded to a fleet of 21 food trucks in 13 cities across the country, one restaurant in West Hollywood and a website where customers can place orders overnight from lobster roll kits to gourmet lobster mac ‘n cheese.
Cousins Main Lobster tells the story of Tselikis and Lomac as they enter the Shark Tank to pitch their case to their expansion. Interestingly, they watched numerous episodes before appearing on the show and they knew the types of questions that would be asked. This enabled them to be well-prepared for the tough questions and ultimately landed them a shark.
I love business books and this one was truly inspiring. Here are some of the tips that the cousins offered in the book:
- Pursue your dreams
- Go all in
- Take risks
- Ask questions
- Know your story
- Stay true to the brand and the values
- Surround yourself with greatness
- Not every opportunity is the right one
- Know what brings you back to your center
- Build to last
- Give something back
The book was well-written and a fast read. I would recommend it for budding entrepreneurs and also for established business owners to bring them back to their roots (because sometimes, this gets away from us!).
The book is published by St. Martin’s Press and you can order the book on Amazon for $15.99.
