The strangest thing happened to me in Berkeley, California.
I went to Berkeley to visit my son. As I was leaving to go back to the airport, he asked if I would take him to Walgreens to pick up a couple of cases of water.
I drove over to the store and stopped with my blinkers on. I was standing in a spot that was a legal spot. A woman pulled up beside me and then double parked her car in front of mine. She got out of the car and proceeded to walk behind my car and write down my license plate.
My heart started to race. Who is this random woman?
My son quickly came back into the car, loaded it up with four cases of water, and we drove off. I told him what happened.
“Oh don’t worry,” he said, “people do that around here. They are average citizens who want to make up their own rules and regulations.”
When I dropped the car off at the rental car company, I told the dispatcher what had happened. “Was the person in a uniform?” he asked.
“No,” I said.
“Then don’t worry about it,” he said.
But it still “freaked” me out. Here’s a photo of her and her car. (I couldn’t resist.)
I can clear up the mystery for you.
It is is illegal to park where you were parked at that corner. That corner is also, during nearby construction, a major downtown bus stop. Uber and Lyft drivers frequently park illegally where you were, causing bus delays and traffic hazards. I think there is probably some grass roots efforts afoot to nail the repeat offenders.
Wow, I didn’t realize it was an illegal place to stand. If I saw that it was a bus stop or if I saw signs, I would have stopped somewhere else. Being an outsider, I had no idea that there were issues in that area and knowing that I’ll be much more conscience of it! Thank you for pointing that out.
