The other day I was sitting around with a few of my friends from the Entrepreneurs’ Organization and we were talking about the way employees leave their employment.
“I had a woman for 10 years who had been very loyal and dedicated,” said one of my buddies. “One day, she just didn’t show up for work. I never heard from her again.”
I started to think about all the crazy ways in which some of my employees left. For example, when I was working out of my house, almost 20 years ago, I had a young man who assisted me with the business. I went out on a sales call and when I got back to my apartment, there was a sticky left on my computer. He told me that he didn’t think the job was for him and left.
I read the note and shook my head.
One time, I hired a woman when we were in Long Beach. She seemed nice enough and I thought she knew what she was doing. Kristie Galvani, Senior VP of HJMT, took her to a meeting. There was a significant amount of yelling at this meeting. She tried to console the new employee by telling her that it wasn’t always like that.
When the two got back to the office, the woman told Kristie that she left her coat in the car and would be right back. Ten minutes went by. Twenty minutes went by. Two hours went by and I got a call on my cell from Kristie. “I don’t think she’s coming back,” Kristie said.
We just shook our heads.
One time I hired a woman right before our annual two day retreat. I had rented a house in the Hamptons for the weekend and decided to invite her to join us. She hadn’t even worked one day but I thought it was the right thing to do to help her bond with the rest of the team. When the weekend ended, she never showed up at work. I tried calling her a few times but she never picked up the phone.
We shook our heads again.
