Rock of Ages, a new off Broadway musical comedy at the New World Stages at 340 W. 50th Street in NYC, opened this weekend in previews but when it opens to the public on October 16 at 7 pm, I expect it to be a real hit!
If you like Journey, Asia, Joan Jett, Styx, Twisted Sister, Pat Benetar and other musicians from the late 80’s, then you will love this show. The play takes place on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. Most of the scenes are held in a local bar.
Without giving much away, a young woman, Shellie, played by Kelli Barrett, from Kansas, wants to be an actress and gets a job at the bar while seeking out her acting career. She falls in love with Drew, the bar’s handy-man and wanna be rock musician, played by American Idol’s Constantine Maroulis. They both love each other but hide their true feelings.
At the same time, a German real estate tycoon is trying to buy the strip and protesters are trying to fight it from happening! There is a lot of sex, violence and plenty of good old fashioned rock and roll. All three of these combined makes this musical comedy a success.
When it’s out of previews, it’s worth a show ticket….
