Many people, including me, became strangely mesmerized watching curling during the Winter Olympics this year. Admit it, we all made fun of it, but when you turned on CNBC first you said, “What the heck is this?” then two hours later you knew what a “hack line” was and what it meant to be “shot rock”. So when I saw a tweet mentioning that the Rochester Curling Club <https://www.rochestercurling.com/> would be holding an open house after the Olympics, I knew I had to go.
Last Saturday, I made my way down to the club and was greeted by friendly club members and a line whose length is now usually reserved for opening night of a Twilight Series movie. After two hours in line, and a brief video, it was my turn to enter the ice shed, take a few shots with a rock and try sweeping. It only took me one shot to get hooked. I instantly signed up for more much needed instruction. I found out that even though it looks effortless on TV, curling is not easy. I don’t know why I thought hurling a 40 pound piece of marble down a sheet of ice would be easy, it’s not, but it is fun.
Thank you Rochester Curling Club for generously opening your doors and letting me try something new. I encourage everyone to see if there is a club near you willing to let you try it for yourself – it’s worth the effort. The only bad thing is now I have no excuse for not sweeping the floors at home… Lisa just tells me it’s practice.
